A Garfield Strip That I Can Enjoy
Topic: Comics

I absolutely hate the Garfield comic strip.  There's nothing interesting about the art or layout and the writing is just terrible.  So it was with some degree of dubious trepidation that I clicked on a link forwarded to me by a friend-of-the-blog.

Mark directed me to Garfield Minus Garfied.  It is exactly what it says it is, the Garfield comic strip with that annoying cat editted out.  What remains is a delightfully disturbing look at a man's self-destructive tumble into loneliness and depression.

Thanks, Mark!  This is great!

Epiphany!
Topic: RPGs

Now Playing: Nine Inch Nails' 36 Ghosts IV from Ghosts I-IV

Flying back to DFW Wednesday night, I had an epiphany.  Now, I know that we're currently in the Easter season and that Epiphany comes after Christmas, but despite the current church season an epiphany was had!

Not a crowded flight, I lucked out getting an entire row to myself.  Minutes after take off, I was comfortably situated listening to the Nine Inch Nails disc Paul hooked me up with and reviewing the Savage Worlds SF Gear and SF World Builder Tool Kits I had printed the night before.  The toolkits don't give you a setting.  They simply assist you in framing your setting by asking some key questions.  As I considered my own Science Fiction setting for my RPG homebrew, I jotted a few notes...

I've been throwing notes together on this setting for a couple of years now.  It's been a struggle tying uniquely interesting elements into a meaningful whole.  Up til now, what I had felt like one-off short stories rather than a fully fleshed campaign world.  I've known there were links there, but I just couldn't find them.

Something about the toolkits, the ample elbow room, and the haunting notes of Ghosts I-IV created an an environment where one lone idea trickled through.

Followed by another.

And another.

I quickly spread out across the row, dropping lap tables in front of the other seats to give me some additional space for books and what all.  As I scribbled into my notebook, the floodgates were drawn wide open.  Ideas rushed from the dam one after the other faster than I could record them!  A unifying theme manifested itself.

Suddenly, it all linked together.

Epiphany!

As ideas which have percolated with me for more than two years became fully formed, entirely new, exciting elements emerged.  Marvelous aspects I have never considered or explored presented themselves enriching those items I've had with me for years.

By the time we landed, I had four golden pages - front and back - of written notes with shorthand scribblings in the margins for new story points.

Many times when I am writing up a game scenario for my players, I'll think yeah, they'll want to play this. Looking over what I captured on the plane, I thought I want to play this! I can't wait to play this!

I'm awfully excited about where this is leading.

Dinner with Paulie
Topic: Personal Commentary

Now Playing: Nine Inch Nails' 28 Ghosts III from the album Ghosts I-IV.

Remember my buddy Paul, from Funny Books with Aron and Paulie?  Well, he and I had dinner tonight.  Enjoying burgers and beer, we yammered about all things geek... Movies, writing, comic books, TV, computers, smartphones, and video games (PC and console).

I gave him a copy of Polymancer that I picked up at Fear The Con as well as Danny Elfman's Serenada Schizophrana.

He gave me the animated Batman vs. Dracula DVD, Blade: House of Chthon DVD, and Nine Inch Nails' Ghosts I-IV.

Returning to the hotel, I called Suzanne telling her what a nice time I had.

"It's nice having a boyfriend, isn't it?" She said.

"Well," I answered, considering.  "He is dreamy."

Marvelous Discovery! Free Printing!
Topic: RPGs

I've got a couple of gaming related PDFs that I've been needing to print, largely because I hate reading large documents on a monitor.  Our printer at home is aged, unable to handle anything too graphics intensive.  We're shopping for a new one.

Wireless, I think.

In the interim, I really need to print a couple of files.

Sitting here at the hotel, I observe the "guest printing" flyer in the room.  There's a business center downstairs.  Documents can be sent to the printer there... I've always imagined that the fees there are astronomical.

I called to the front desk, "How much is guest printing?"

"No charge."

"Seriously?"

"Seriously."

Holy crap!

I just printed 69 pages worth of the Savage Worlds Science Fiction Gear Toolkit.  Next in the queue is the Science Fiction World Builder!

Woot!

Why We Marry
Topic: Personal Commentary

A friend of mine and I were talking yesterday.  She is at a cross-roads in a relationship and is struggling with that next step.  Get married to the guy?  Or not.

Her question, "Why does he want to get married?"

He's financially secure.  He can come and go as he pleases.  Why settle down?

"Speaking for myself," I said to her, "I married Suzanne because I was happier with her than without her.  I missed her when I she wasn't around.  She makes me laugh.  I'm crazy in love with her.  Why wouldn't I want to marry her?"

She pondered that.

"You need to ask him that question," I said.  "That exact question."

"I plan to," She responded.

I can't wait to hear how that turns out.

Vroom! Vroom!
Topic: Personal Commentary

And now, a story that never happened...

When I arrived at the rental car desk today, I expected to be provided a Toyota Corolla or perhaps a Honda Civic.  The company will only pay for the sensible cars, you know?

"Mustang alright?" The lady asked at the desk.

"Yeah," I answered, still operating within my fog of airtravel induced by a plane full of teenagers on spring break.  Then I brightened, "Hell yeah!"

At no additional charge, I was provided a honey of a car for this trip.

In addition to being a bit broad across the beam, I also happen to be 6'2".  I got a lotta leg.  And let me tell you, my knees are up into my chest in this car.  For a moment, a brief moment, I considered returning to the desk.

But then I turned that engine over and let me tell you - it growled, rumbling a deep bass that I felt in the center of my chest.

"What are you gonna do, you big girl?" It demanded.  "Pass me up to climb into some 4-cyllinder pansy mobile with ample leg room?!?!"

Oh hell no!

Before you knew it, I was rocketing down the expressway, gunning that monster.  Roaring past other, less manly vehicles I felt like  Steve McQueen, the coolest man who ever lived.  Hell, I was even feeling a bit Dukes of Hazard... I wanted to jump something!

At one point, I even channeled Luke.

"Wooooooooot!" I cried at the top of my lungs, "I'm the freakin' devil!"

Arriving at my hotel room, I popped a couple of Advil.  My knees were hurting.  Really, no leg room at all.

...and this story never happened.  You know it never happened because The Wife told me to be careful when she kissed me goodbye this morning.  And I always do what Suzanne tells me.

Always.

My knees do hurt, though.

Of Jesus, Good Eats, Raccoons, and Wine
Now Playing: Bono's "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" from Across The Universe
Topic: Personal Commentary

No doubt you have observed a curious lack of entries on the blog since last week.  I know, I've been neglectful.  But I can explain!

The 'busy' started during Holy Week, particularly on Maundy Thursday.  Maundy Thursday is the specific feast day commemorating Christ's Last Supper with his apostles.  From the time our evening service ends to the first mass of Good Friday, various parishoners "stand watch" at the church symbolic of Christ's request that his guys pray with him in the Garden of Gethsemane.

I stand a watch every year.  It's a favorite tradition of mine.

This year, I had the Midnight to one a.m. shift.

The Wife sent me off in style with a mighty meal.  She prepared Suzanne's World Famous Maundy Thursday Dinner to celebrate the Last Supper Jesus had with his Apostles.  The meal was comprised of Herbed Cornish Game Hems, Twice Baked Yam, and Fresh Collard Greens with Shallots and Garlic.  Suzanne said that Jesus and the boys dined on this exact dish, but since the dudes who wrote the Bible are biblical scholars, priests, and prophets, they could not be expected to write an accurate restaurant review.

The hen is prepared breast-down to keep it juicy.  That's why it appears upside down in the image.  Everything was great.  I'd never had cornish hens nor collards before.  Both were terrific.  And me loves the yammage!  Yummage!

That wife of mine is awful good to me.

It was with a full belly that I arrived at church.  Our men's ministry, The Brotherhood of Saint Andrews, coordinates men on the street ensuring that the faithful get from their cars to the church unmolested and also provides a person inside the church as well.  I volunteered for street duty.  It was a lovely crisp night with a big moon beaming down.

I prayed my Rosary while I stood my watch.  I chatted with the Most High (we go way back).  I pondered.

I heard a noise across the street.  Something was rustling about in the far shadows.  The form moved fast from under trees, leaves crunching...

Its movement was too bizarre to be a cat or a dog...

Moonlight hit its eyes.  They were large, focused on me... as he crossed the street.

"Oh crap..."  I took a step back.

Into the street light it moved, the biggest freakin' raccoon I have ever seen in my life.  He was a monster!

He slowed as he approached my sidewalk.  Pausing, he considered me. Something passed between us.

One might have taken from the encounter that even the wild creatures  come to the Garden to pray with our Lord.

I know that the raccoon was really wondering, "What's this fat dufus doing here so late?!?!  I bet he'd be good with mustard..."

He gave me the stink-eye and moved away.

The remainder of my watch was uneventful.  But there's no denying it... I was very nearly devoured by a rabid, atheist raccoon!

With four hours of sleep,  I plowed into Friday.  I hit the hardware store and picked up stuff for the garden (two daisy bushes and a whole bunch of dirt), picked up a couple of DVDs (30 Days of Night and Threshold: The Complete Series), hit the bookstore (and despite seeing a couple of good books, didn't pick up anything - see!  I can delay gratification!), took The Wife out for lunch (some terrible Thai), won a valuable prize (I'll tell you about that later), took The Wife for a mani-pedi while I drank beer at the brew pub around the corner (Irish Red!), went back to the hardware store to look at more plants (with The Wife this time), replaced the lever on the toilet (which necessitated a THIRD trip to the hardware store), and took The Wife for dinner (Panera!).

Being dissatisfied with Loews' selection of plants, Suzanne and I embarked on a voyage to Dallas' Farmers Market where we picked up all kinds of stuff.  I'll post pictures later.  Returning to the house, I spent the remainder of the day in the dirt getting the plants in.  At about five o'clock, I went inside to shower.

We had dinner Saturday night with two other couples at a great restaurant south of town, Joey's.  The owner/operator shouts out my name when I come through the door.  Love that guy!

It's an Italian joint where you can bring your own bottle.  I think we had five different bottles on the table.  We had a blast.

I was so sore, the wine was truly welcome.  I quickly reached a warm, happy state.

At dinner, Rodger gave me the Across the Universe disk.  That mutha is da' bomb diggity!  I'm getting a kick out of Bono's Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, but I think Jim Sturgess really steals the show with EVERY freaking song he sings!

Sunday morning, Easter, Suzanne and I both served at church - I read from Acts and the Psalm.  Suzanne led the prayers.

I brought work home this weekend, spending several hours in computer based training in preparation for more training I have at the corporate office this week.

So, it's been a busy few days.

A Peace Rally? Here?!?
Topic: Personal Commentary

On the way back from Royal Panda last night with a little take out action to remediate the horror that was the Ventera Ranch Chicken Pad Thai, I passed by a crowd of folks on both the west and east sides of Collins Street.  It was near Hooters, so I initially thought that there might be some kind of car wash or fundraiser going on.  Nope...

It was a rally.

A peace rally.

Get this, there were real, live peace-nicks shouting out for peace.

Right here.

In Arlington, a city that has been staunchly conservative and hawkish all my life.

I'd suggest they were bussed in, but Arlington doesn't have mass transportation.

Truly, quite stunning.

Anybody check the weather in hell?  I suspect that it might be a bit frosty down there.

Nasty Assed Dinner - Ventera Ranch's Chicken Pad Thai
Topic: Food

Suzanne and I like Costco.  We enjoy shopping there because one never know what wonderful things will be found.

For instance... One time? I picked up a complete season of Babylon 5 for fifteen bucks.  Wish I could find the rest of them for that price.  That was a good day.  Lately, Costco's DVD selection has sucked.

We like to try new things often finding wonderful items to bring home.  We've discovered some great sausage and pastas and wine... Really, some quality stuff.

On a recent excursion, we discovered the Ventera Ranch frozen Chicken Pad Thai entree.  We love Thai food.  So much so that Suzanne cooks Thai cuisine from time-to-time.  While no frozen dinner could ever measure up to the wondrous revelation that is Suzanne's Pad Thai, we thought this frozen dinner might be nice for an evening that we don't feel like cooking.

I prepared the Ventera Ranch Chicken Pad Thai this evening.  I chose the stove top method of preparation.

Following the directions, I empted the contents of the sauce bag into the pan and began to heat over a low flame.  Then I emptied the noodle packet into the pan, stirring gently but frequently.  The noodles all broke apart into short shards.  The sauce had none of the creamy characteristics of an authentic Pad Thai sauce, rather it was gritty.

It looked more like something fed to prisoners at a Supermax facility than dinner for me and The Wife.

Ventera Ranch's Chicken Pad Thai was one nasty assed mess in the pan.

"I don't want to eat this," I said to Suzanne.

"Me neither," She said.

Twenty minutes later I returned to the house with Szechuan Beef and Mushu Pork from Royal Panda.  It ain't Thai food, but it did the trick.

Arthur C. Clarke - R.I.P.
Topic: Sci-Fi

Arthur C. Clarke, Hugo and Nebula award winnging author of such sci-fi classics as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Childhood's End, and Rendevous With Rama, died yesterday.

Well... actually he died today.  He lives... er lived... in Sri Lanki, which is on the other side of the world from me.  In fact as I write this, it's Tuesday night in Texas and it's Wednesday in Sri Lanka.  So... really, he's still alive to me.  But dead there?

Very confusing.

I think I'll do us all a favor and post this Wednesday morning, Texas time.  That way we'll all be in the same space-time continuum.

Except it'll be Thursday in Sri Lanka... Time space continuum at risk...!  This may have been an episode of Star Trek at some point.

I digress.

I have to confess that I have never cared for Clarke's writing.  While I enjoyed the movies 2001 and 2010, I didn't connect with the books.  His other books I've read, I wasn't able to finish.  I found his style very dry.

His books seem like works I should like.  But I don't.

Clarke has written things that are so true, they are now considered cliche.  For instance he coined this gem:

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Regardless of what you think of his writing, you cannot deny his impact on  the culture... nor on science.

The dude championed the whole notion of the geostationary telecommunications satellite as early as 1945.  Guy's got an orbit named after him!  As the International Herald Tribune put it: "Geosynchronous orbits, which keep satellites in a fixed position relative to the ground, are called Clarke orbits."

Clarke was 90 years old.
